PORCUPINE EN PRIMAVERA (PORCUPINE IN SPRING)

By Steena Hernandez (150 Words)

Drip. Drop. Ice melts off a hollowed tree trunk.

Huddling, not hibernating, Porcupine stayed warm from invierno’s freeze.

Her whiskers poke out, as she breathes in primavera’s first morning air.

Munching on tree bark for many cold months brings a new appetite.

But her search for berries, seeds, and grasses can be lonely.

Perhaps primavera days would be better shared with a friend. But who?

Not many risk coming close to her thirty thousand quills.

Quills that can grow up to twenty inches long!

Quills that she only raises and rattles when she is scared.

Near a stream, Mariposa sips the sweet nectar of budding flowers.

Porcupine gently approaches.

With a fluttering twirl, Mariposa lands on Porcupine’s whiskers.

Splash! Porcupine takes a dip into the stream.

Hollow quills make her an excellent swimmer.

Mariposa enjoys the view, while Porcupine paddles along.

This primavera, a sweet and unexpected friendship has formed.
